Ivan noticed the girl's gulp and make the decision that she was, by all likelihoods, going to change the subject. Which was fine enough. Though it left him extremely curious, he was never one pry. He observed stuff, of course. But if someone didn't want to tell him something, he would sit back and let it fly. Honestly, most people's secrets weren't important to him anyway and he'd found in past he would often be disappointed when he actually found out that it was something silly, like liking a type of music most people didn't or considering bisexuality. It was never a big secret and never something that really bothered him. It was merely the not knowing that drove him out of his mind. Because it could be something big and enormous and important and they often would act like it was and then it would turn out that they'd been drinking or smoking and he honestly couldn't care less. But that was the thing - Ivan had an idea, a quote, or something along those lines. "There is always a chance that what you don't know might be able to hurt you, whereas if you know it the danger of it is not decreased or increased. In the event that something can hurt you and you do know about it, you can prepare whereas if you don't, you are a sitting duck. Your knowledge of something has nothing to do with the danger of that thing, but, when unknown, there is always potential for danger of any type."
Nevertheless, he did not pry - prying lost allies and got you lies. It was better to merely observe. It was the same reason he often let others choose the course of a conversation - they would talk about what was on their minds, or accidentally hint at it, and he would often comment. The trick was adding enough to conversation that the other didn't notice they were being observed. And, that way, it allowed him to enjoy the conversation, while gaining what he could from it. Though, if you understood that his battlefield was in fact conversation, you might think him aloof or distant, that's hardly the truth. Ivan, for many years, has merely conversed this way. You can hardly blame him - he does plan on becoming a politician after all. But more then that, it was just Ivan. Rarely was he entirely open. That doesn't mean he wasn't himself. He was himself through a filter. But, honestly, who wasn't? Who says everything they think without consideration? Such a person would have no control and be hated. As far as Ivan is concerned, he fits right into a world of lies - he just uses them to his advantage.
Alright, she changed the subject. As predicted. He thought. Well, I'm not exactly skipping a class. Ivan waited for her to finish the thought, before starting. "I like English and History best. I was naturally good at maths and science, but, I don't really enjoy either of them. I don't really hate anything, though. I'm honors courses for just about everything - that's not bragging, mind you, I get a crap ton of homework. But I'm not exactly skipping a class. I was planning to camp out here and slip in as school was ending so that I could introduce myself to the teachers and principal without a bunch of annoying kids surrounding me and driving me out of my mind. I don't have a schedule or anything yet, so that's my excuse if a teacher catches me. My excuse in full is: I was busy finishing unpacking and therefore left my house late. Then, because I was new to this town and had only my memory of when we drove in while I was half-asleep, I had trouble getting here, By the time I got here, I figured it would be better to wait until the rest of the children were dismissed so that I would not interrupt class." He tilted his head slightly. "I went out my way to make that as little of a lie as possible. I'm pretty sure they'll buy it. And, I've always got the perfect excuse for whenever I do anything scandalous or rude: I'm English." He gave a chuckle.
